"The Book of Fairy Poetry" (1920)

Illustrated by Warwick Goble

"The Book of Fairy Poetry" was not solely edited for the sensibilities of children, but also for lovers of poetry and fairy-lore.

The collection compiled Dora Owen includes works from the 16th to the 19th Centuries. Selected works are drawn from some of the great names

of English literature, such as: William Shakespeare; Alfred Tennyson; Sir Walter Scott; Christina Rossetti; John Milton; Robert Louis Stevenson;

J R R Tolkein; William Yeats; and John Keats.

Longmans, Green and Co. (London) published the book for the purposes of supplementing and completing a series of Fairy books edited formerly

by Andrew Lang and it was presented in three parts: Fairy Stories; Fairy Songs, Dances and Talk; and Fairy-land and Fairy Lore.

Contemporary reviews were most supportive, as indicated in the following critique published in "The Bookseller" (Vol. 53: 1920):

"The Book of Fairy Poetry", edited by Dora Owen, is a superlatively lovely holiday

gift book, for apart from the lure of its happy theme it is adorned with charming

full page colour illustrations by Warwick Goble tipped in on heavy art which are

a joy to pour over in leisure hours. Besides these there are jolly sketches in black

and white, which further illustrate fairy songs, dances, play and talk of this

handsome quarto volume with its decorated lining leaves and its feast of splendid

entertainment.

This suite proved to be the last of a series of generous and sumptuous gift books designed by Goble and his illustrations - in both colour

and monotone - complement the engaging tales of fairy-folk wonderfully.
